Wrong Again: Markets: Dow Jones Industrial Average

Markets: Dow Jones Industrial Average

The market did go up, but it wasn't up all day, nor did it have a triple digit gain.

On the upside, the DNC week market did post a 1% gain for the week. Not bad since Krispy Kreme pulled an ENRON. This corporate capitalistic economy is not a free market.

A true free-market would lower the barriers to entry for small organizations. And if the invisible hand were allowed to have more power than the global titans, wealth would be redistributed in more equitable fashion. Not just nationally, but globally. But our military still initiates wars for economic benefit.

We are subsidizing the plundering of Iraq and our national coffers, so that Dick will keep his pension, and go back to work for the biggest thieves in Iraq - Halliburton. I'm sure he'll end up on the board at GE, also.

Some of the Crap on FOXNews.com - You Decide

FOXNews.com - You Decide 2004 - Progressives Want Kerry, Dept. Of Peace

We threw an OUTFOXED party the other week. Since then I have been surfing to FOX to check out what they're passing off as news these days.

The story sounds innocuous enough with a quick read. I think I get more out of their spin through my filter than I get from many other 'news' sites. A few great quotes to rethink:

"[Republicans] have Kerry's support for the war. You support the Democrats; you support the war," yelled one young progressive demonstrator, briefly disrupting the meeting. He roused little support and afterward was gently and quietly ushered out of the rally.

Dissention in the ranks? Are we squashing the peacenik anarchists' voices? Good work FOX. At least we know he's not some pro-life Christian terrorist. This crap stinks.

"The call has to be to stop the war, not internationalize the war as we're hearing from some people. We have to stop the war and internationalize the peace," Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies (search), told the audience

We really need to talk to these people and ask them what part of Kerry's plan fails to address exactly how we will bring peaceful days and quiet nights back to the great nation of Iraq? We have heard the reality: pulling out suddenly and completely is irresponsible and out of the question. That would do more damage than good.

Kerry voted to authorize Bush to go to war in Iraq, but later refused to support the $87 billion emergency supplemental bill to pay for U.S. troops and reconstruction efforts after major combat ended.

This one is soooooo tired.

Other attendees acknowledged that the young protester had the facts right, but argued that Kerry would be a far better option than Bush, and progressives would have a chance of influencing Kerry, while Bush's ears would certainly be plugged.

Meaning: "Kerry will flip flop. They know it already and that's why they want him President. Vote to re-appoint King George."

Fun. Always a laugh to find out what the right is reading.

I find it important to keep a wary eye on the sources of our news. MSNBC really lays it on thick these days. I think we need to disconnect our news sources, by law, from their economic interests. Even if every time MSNBC wrote about the war, they also mentioned that they have a direct monetary interest in the continuance of the war through the profiteering arm of GE Corp, it would not be enough, CNN has made that type of mention so ubiquitous that it seems almost innocent. AOLTimeWarnerCNNblahblahblah has yet to name the AOL guy "person of the Decade," but give it time and I know they will.

How Do You Like That?! Kerry Takes Command!

CBS News Kerry Takes Command July 29, 2004

Great job, Johnny! The Ketchup Kennedy Clinton Convention comes to a close delivering grade A performances with conviction and determination.

Future President John Kerry (it will be nice to have a President again) spoke his heart out tonight. Fantastic, I think. John schvitzed under the hot lights and never lost his cool. His literary technique combined with his stage talents and political fire shows us the President Kerry we will be proud to call our own.

Economically, we can know our situations will improve under Kerry. In fact, I think it will start tomorrow, in a jump of the DOW greater than one hundred points, never lower between the bells, than tonight's close. Monday ended up. I heard it was because of certain profit reports (but it went down on good profit report days this month), but I posit the thought that it was the opening of the Democratic Convention.

Result have been less positive in the past two sessions. The four day stageshow has been so compelling, though, that I know tomorrow will show the market longs for the glory days of Clinton economic and monetary policies. Traditionally, the market will be edgy in the coming months and days, but I think we will see something unique happen over the next few months. We are to bear witness to an evangelical political steam roller. Our momentum will grow to epic proportions as we watch the lights go on in so many dark attics. Those who have been deceived by the false messenger will see the light, and their minds will light up also, to critical mass and beyond to January 20th, when we have a lawful President once again.

Bush is Not Lance Armstrong

L.A. Daily News - News

This stupid story is on all the news sites. I'm sure it was written by the Bush campaign headquarters, since the quotes are identical, as are all the written paragraphs. What I find funny is the reference to Lance Armstrong.

Bush is not at all similar to Lance Armstrong. I saw the reference to Armstrong on several websites, which have since seen fit to edit that reference out (a smart move, for sure).

Barak!

Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, your attention please.

The Senate has a new star: Barak Obama. Barak should now skate into office with no sweat, discounting some dirty GOP maneuver...

Watch his speech. They said Clinton would steal the show. Well, Senator Obama has stolen the show from Slick Willy.

And tomorrow, look for some old-time prestidigitating the likes of which have not been seen since the days of Dan'l, Dan'l Webster. And what could be better than some butter and honey from Edwards? You'll find out on Thursday.

Where Did Iraq Go?

It's unfortunate for the Republicans that it took the DNC to wipe Iraq off the face of the Earth, or the newspapers, at least.

Did you know that more of our troops have died in the month since the turnover of power than the month before? Sure, King George predicted as much, but where is the press when he's right? I have not seen the New York Times headline: Bush Finally Guessed Right About Iraq!

The irony should not be lost on John Kerry, either. The convention has featured quite a bit of talk about Iraq, has he noticed that his party has effectively made it a non-issue? John?

Look for August to be worse. And it will return to the front page.

My November Predictions

I still say Kerry will win by a considerable margin. It will be an early night for Bush, like it should have been last time.

The Congress will convene and pass so many lame-duck bills for Bush to sign, it will make our heads spin. All of it will be unrelated to anything remotely close to a law to make us safer from terrorist attack.

The New England Patriots will head into the NFL Playoffs with an 11 and 5 record.

Ken Lay will plead guilty, in time for King George to pardon him in January.

Dick Cheney will make arrangements to take over Halliburton when he leaves office.

November 1, Tom Ridge will raise the rainbow gauge to orange in a last ditch effort to win votes for the GOP.

Democrats will retake the Senate and come close to taking the House.

Jim Francesconi will become Mayor of Portland.

The fagbasher amendment will fail in Oregon.

A Week of the DNC and the Liberal Agenda

Not that I am not looking forward to watching the polls bounce and hearing the party platform, it's just that I am not A Democrat and know I will get tired of the pomp and circumstance and self-congratulatory atmosphere. Sure you're all the greatest. There will be other things happening, and I know the media will do it's best to ignore it.

As for Ralph and his Reform Party bid, do not worry. No one can vote honestly for Nader if they are truly committed to changing the direction of the nation. If Bush takes the Oath of Office in January, it will be our fault. All of ours. Finger-pointing will not help our situation, it will help King George's. Once we internalize the importance of the regime change at home, we will prevail at the polls this November.

I have become evangelical about my liberal agenda. It includes the homosexual agenda, the eco-terrorist agenda (their label, not mine) and from what I understand about right-wing rhetoric, the pinko-commie bastard agenda. I admit wholeheartedly to supporting, in my heart, these left-wing values.

Even more so, I am evangelical about my conservative agenda. My conservative agenda includes individual and group social and civil liberties, prudence and frugality in government spending, states' rights and individual entrepreneurial protections.

Whatever the homosexual agenda, I honestly do not feel the federal government, nor the state governments, have any right to act in any way other than to protect the rights of individuals. Same goes for abortion: it is not for you or me to say what someone else cannot do. Our rights end where other people's begin. That line begins just outside of our bodies. It is the responsibility of the government to enforce that line, not violate it.

As an acknowledged eco-terrorist sympathizer, I say to you: I do not even know what eco-terrorism means in this context. If you ask me, the oil-pumping, clearcutting, river damning, coal burning, gas guzzling, nuclear waste generating, toxin manufacturing military industrial complex does much more damage to the Earth's ecology than those who would sabotage the desctructo-machine.

A terrorist destroys. The eco-terrorists are the destroyers, which tangentially and directly includes us all. Some much more than others. The groups labeled as eco-terrorists, such as the ELF, Dirt Fist! and the like have yet to target a single human life, or take one. Saboteurs, yes, terrorists, no. Their financial impact has been so negligible, they are hardly worth worrying about. The worry for the machine should be folks like me, folks who think, speak out and vote. We're the true danger to the right-wing, neo-conservative, authoritarian, international corporate domination agenda.

Corpo-terrorists should shake in their Italian leather shoes. Corporate entities have run roughshod over our planet and will soon begin answering for their crimes. Enron was just a drop in the bucket. We look forward to a time of corporate responsibility which extends to the damage done by board decisions. When we begin putting board members behind bars and extending punitive damages to the point where they dismantle the organization, hold executive and board leadership criminally accountable and bar these people from doing business of any sort as untouchable unaccountable entities.

Ah, for the luxury of doing this professionally. I have other topics to post and too little time. I leave you with this thought: real patriots do not try to control us through through hegemonic systems of law.

Another one of those stories that won't go away. This could boil over again.

Here's A Bit From Our Friends Down Under

NEWS.com.au | Allawi witnesses believable: journo (July 19, 2004)

Wow. I wonder why the American news doesn't cover this one? I haven't seen it on CNN, CBS. I found the link at the Philadelphia Inquirer. They just made the link section, as will the Australian news page.

Political Accounting, ENRON Style

Philadelphia Inquirer | 07/19/2004 | Enron e-mail shows political links

How many times can we get credit for a dollar? If you ask ENRON, it might be five times or more.

Not that this proves anything criminal. Prima facie, it does nothing other than make a great anecdote about how many times you can count the same dollar. And then how many people can claim these imaginary dollars.

HT Wire Danger: CNN.com - No letup for firefighters in California - July 19, 2004

CNN.com - No letup for firefighters in California - July 19, 2004

The bird did not cause the fire, stupid! The wires did. Had the wires not been there, there would have been no fire. Birds do not fly around causing fires.

I do not follow the causality of the reporter's bird fire. This stands as a great example of what our media does to try to reprogram us. Surely, if the report said the wires, probably owned by So. Cal. Edison, had caused the fire, the author would have been fired and sued for libel, regardless of the truth of the conclusion.

Not that I'm some conspiracy theorist, mind you. I'm just interpreting the facts, as reported. And I'm not wrong.

The Governor With The Golden Tongue: CBS News | Arnold's 'Girlie Men' Goad Grates | July 19, 200415:11:14

CBS News | Arnold's 'Girlie Men' Goad Grates | July 19, 200415:11:14

What frustration Arnold must feel. Does he not understand the nature of our government? Our Republic safeguards against the consolidation of power into one pair of hands. To be a successful Governor, he needs to learn that his is not the right decision. To the contrary, his ideas have as little merit as anyone else's, when dealing with a legislature. He was not elected King. I hope Arnold gets that through his thick head.

The girlie-men shall inherit the Earth, I say.

68% Homeownership?

Bush claims that 68% of us own our homes. Well, I'm not one of them. I must know the other 32%, because very fewer people I know own their homes.

I do not know where this number came from. Perhaps it was the same place that the report that terrorist attacks have been down and that Saddam was a danger to us.

I submit that this number is not representative of owner-occupied primary residences. That's the number I want to hear. Bush probably doesn't want us to know that its probably lower that it ever has been before.

CNN.com - Nuclear dump to proceed despite ruling - July 14, 2004

When you dance with disaster, be prepared for the worst. This has been a bad idea since day 1. And until we research ways to neutralize this danger, as opposed to burying it, it will be an accident waiting to happen.

SI.com - Jones struggles into long jump final at Olympic trials - Tuesday July 13, 2004 1:42AM

Except that the so-called circumstantial evidence points to the thought that things just are not the same since BALCO closed.

Maybe we should let them all take drugs and kill themselves. Maybe we should encourage it. What should we care? They're just grown adults playing games. This way we could get more people on the sports gravy train. Sports would be more entertaining if everyone were allowed to dope. Just think, the record for the 100 meter could be shaved all the way down to .01 seconds. Wouldn't that be a great achievement? Too bad his heart exploded, though. He couldn't even live to enjoy the fame.

Maybe we should make doping mandatory for sports competitions. That way we could be sure that everyone has the same competitive advantages.

I suppose it really doesn't matter in the long run, they're just athletes. They don't contribute anything to society and really are not worth all this grief. Suspend them all.

Is the Economy Really that Great: Americans put away their wallets | csmonitor.com

Americans put away their wallets | csmonitor.com

I submit that the economy is not quite out of control, but fishtailing on a slick road, unable to gain meaningful traction.

Unemployment numbers are down. But a record number of folks have exhausted their benefits. Check the welfare rolls.

The poverty gap is bigger than ever. Wages are not keeping pace with inflation. And the robber barons keep squeezing productivity gains out of us.

Boy, am I tired.

Panel Describes Long Weakening of Hussein Army

The New York Times > International > Middle East > Panel Describes Long Weakening of Hussein Army

More 20/20 vision, for me. However, it is not hindsight, it was foresight.

Millions of us knew from the beginning that Hussein posed as much threat as a caged monkey to the United States. We had cut him off for a decade from the rest of the world. His army was little more than a small sweat for our military back in 1991. What did we think? Suddenly he had the strongest military in the world and was just waiting to pounce on the US? His invasion could possibly stand a chance of toppling our strong Republic?

BAH! Hogwash. And shame on you if you thought so. Think for yourself every once in a while.

Where have our critical reasoning skills gone? Perhaps we just dropped them off at the curb to be picked up like so mush rubbish when Ronald Reagan got elected back in 1980. Since then, it has been dangerous to think independently. Two things come from such audacity: misery and jail.

I hope you are miserable. And not in jail.

Riordan Remark Is Still Causing Trouble

Riordan Remark Is Still Causing Trouble

Dick means dirty old bastard. Richard is old enough to know loose lips will sink your ship. His ship is sunk.

Dick will be retiring. He obviously has no regard for children nor has he any of the basic knowledge required to do the job of education chief. I would begin looking into his past to see what evidence we have that he thinks little girls are dirty.

I take exception to his statement to Isis on the grounds that his comment sounds like that comment of someone who would give 'Jesus Juice" to a little girl to see how dirty she really is. What other names mean dirty little girl?

Using my 20/20 vision, a smart and irreproachable man would never have even thought of saying that to a 10 year old. An 18 year old, maybe, but not a ten year old. He could have said, " I think Isis means girl with the sparkling eyes," or something in context like "Goddess of the Nile."

That would have been too difficult for him, though. I speculate that his scandalous double entendre shows his distaste for ancient Egyptian theology as much as his latent sexual desires toward little blonde girls.

Game over, Dick.

Confidential to Arnold: Dump him and get someone who has some expertise in education, perhaps a PhD in childhood development and an MBA. Check credentials.

Patriot and Homeland Security Acts

Everyone needs to read these laws before the next election. And ask yourself: Does my congressional representative represent me when passing these bills?

I've Got A Credible Report for You

How about this: Osama bin Laden wants George Bush to stay as the American President.

George Bush has been a boon to the terrorist world. He alone has driven recruitment numbers through the roof. And attacks.

Tom Ridge wants us to believe that Osama will try to interrupt our democratic process. The strategy calls for pointing to the Madrid bombing as proof that when the attack comes, it means terrorists want you to vote for Kerry. Hogwash!

Osama could not be happier than when another one of our freedoms disappear. He sees America destroying itself through hate, fear, suspicion and war. The Bush administration is so reactionary that all Osama has to do is toss out the random "BOO" to keep us in check.

Are we really this bad? Is this the America I grew up in? I really think not.

Justice Should Not Be Measured in Dollars

Pick a link. Portland made national news again, in a bad way.

The issue of priest abuse has become a recurring nightmare for all of us. We will not soon forget about it, and neither will the church. Now, our local church has filed for bankruptcy protection.

I am no cheerleader for the Catholic Church. 1800 years of misery, if you ask me.

They key here is 1800 years. The better part of two millennia is a long time for an institution to hang around. Someday it will probably fade, but not soon, I'm sure.

The Church has weathered storms and changed with the times, if a little behind. The inquisition was bad for business, as were so many other periods in Church history. Including the sexual abuse scandal.

Many victims have come forward and demanded redress for their pain and suffering, which they richly deserve. Redress on the order of tens of millions of dollars, however, clearly does no true good for the victims, nor does it address the real problems faced by a church which has not really kept up with the times.

I think we need a new Pope. The whole world needs a new Pope. I do not really think that John Paul can truly wrap his tired mind around the reality of the 21st century. Poor guy needs help with his soup. Get him to a home.

I think the Church resists on account of laziness. They have the protection of the feeble man, who probably doesn't even remember about the sex scandal anymore, nor can he make a decision about what to do. He insists on no change.

I am sure the congress of cardinals, or whatever they call themselves, do not know what to do. The church needs change, and it is much easier to keep the old guy on a ventilator and wheel him out into public every few months than to put a plan of action together and execute it.

Change is going to be painful, however, the Church will survive. Perhaps any sexual abuse victims who want true justice will opt to negotiate change within the church, rather than take 10s of millions of dollars of important social services away from their communities.
